Indian Pincode System
Introduction
Pin Code or the Postal Index Number is primarily used by the Indian Postal Administration and this national numbering system was first introduced on 15th August 1972. The six-digit number is generally included in the address to deliver letters, couriers and other items. This number series is extremely important and has various other uses such as:-

- It also helps in banking services.
- With the help of this useful 6-digit code, money order facilities, stamp issuing, or insurance facilities are be provided to Indian citizens.
- The Indian postal service is the largest postal network in the world and includes more than 1 lakh 55 thousands post offices across the country.
- India has a total of eight regional zone PIN. One functional zone PIN is assigned exclusively for the India Army. The first digit of this pin code represents your region. The second digit represents the sub-region and the third digit represents the district in a specific region. And, the last three digit of this code represents the individual post offices of a particular district.
- As the regions are divided into 4 parts, the first digit of the pin code always varies. For example, 1 and 2 digit signifies the Northern region, 3 and 4 the Western region, 5 and 6 the Southern region and 7 and 8 belongs to the Eastern region.
- The pin code system is similar to the US Zip code system. It is planned in such a way that all the mails are received by only one post office and they distribute it among the lower offices within its jurisdiction. These offices have the same code.
